Introduction
Inside the coffeehouse I'm sitting next to a table of people analyzing each other's writing. Acoustic guitar/singer in the small front parlor serenades. Big voice. The writers' positive criticism rises over the heartbreaking songs. No mercy.

These writers have a range of expertise to draw on, from published to not-quite-yet, so the perspectives are personally and professionally varied which creates a knowledgeable climate in which to present ongoing work. There is a willingness to follow a writer through the unpteenth draft with continued encouragement. This group provides a good opportunity to test drive material and get an intelligent and supportive yet "ordinary reader" response. The timed critiques are considerate but unsparing with praise as well as corrections, suggestions and personal reactions. The once-a-month meetup varies the meeting nights by consensus to accommodate schedules.
